Holiday Baking Month: 1920s Throwback Marble Cake
Prep: 10 minutes Bake: 15-20
To celebrate a new year and the return of the 20s, I found an old fashioned marble cake recipe from the 1920s. I then messed around to decorate it. This was interesting to make and taste I had a few things to guess over but the cake worked well.
Ingredients
1 stick of softened butter
1 cup of sugar
5 eggs
2 cups of flour
1 tsp baking powder
3 oz baking chocolate
1 tsp vanilla
Red food coloring
Prep
Preheat the oven to 375 F (190 C)
In a large bowl add the butter and sugar and cream together
Add the eggs 1 at a time and mix well
Add the flour, vanilla and baking powder and mix until you have a smooth cake batter
Melt the baking chocolate
Add small amounts of the batter to 2 different small bowls
Mix one with the chocolate and the other with the red food coloring. A few drops is fine, but make it as red as you’d like
Grease a cake pan and pour in the main gold cake batter
Pour the chocolate and red dough on top and use a knife to swirl this around and mix it to create the marble affect
Bake for 15 minutes and add a few until a toothpick comes out clean
Let cool completely before icing. I used Buttercream icing to decorate
Afterthoughts
I had to guess at the baking time and overbaked it a bit. This is super thick and heavy for a cake but was a lot of fun and delicious. The buttercream icing was immaculate as always. I used too much batter for my chocolate amount so it was a little weaker than I wanted but still tasty. This old fashioned recipe was a lot of fun.
