Restaurant Review: The Pub

Restaurant Review: The Pub

In Dayton, Ohio there’s an outdoor shopping centre that hosts a vibe for fancier food and clothes with prices to match. The Greene is home to a British restaurant called the Pub and is a place that boasts not only an authentic atmosphere and food, but also the ‘Best Fish and Chips’ with an award to match. You can find the Pub on the first corner when visiting the Greene, and it’s black wood exterior keeps it apart and separate from the red brick motif of the surrounding shopping centre.

The wood paneling is continued inside with memorabilia and decorations to transport any traveler or visitor to the small island across the pond. A Union Jack watches from above where it has been painted on the ceiling. The interior has three sections that give different feels and experiences. To your left, you will see a slightly raised area with massive chairs that give an impression of a throne for larger parties with some booths. In the center, you have a massive central bar with many drinks on display. To the far right, you have more tables and booths for a more recognizable seating experience.

The wait staff has a fun uniform as the women are given a choice of wearing tartan based skirts or darker pants to add to the atmosphere of a British establishment. A more authentic feel would be the black pants if my trip in 2012 is any indication of that experience.

My family has visited a few times and the food has been excellent each time. The shepherd’s pie has been a delectable experience with the perfect layers of succulent mashed potatoes, peas and carrots, perfectly cooked meat and a wonderful layer of mozzarella. It might not have been voted “Best in the US” like the fish and chips but it is the best I’ve had outside Epcot in Disneyworld on this side of the Atlantic.

My mother always goes for the fish and chips and the massive fish is always a golden brown and crispy event. It takes a large plate to hold its girth and you can find the requisite malt vinegar on every table. This visit I tried a more vegetarian experience and had the spinach and artichoke dip with naan bread that was coated in mozzarella and a perfect shareable. The Gouda Mac was a creamy adventure that was sharp and gone way to fast. The music was British classic bands and got my parents and I singing Here Comes the Sun together.

The Pub is a great place to visit for a family meal that will be completely filling and heavy. The food is cooked in the perfect fried or baked way that you need. The portion sizes are big and will ensure you need to lap the center a few times before driving home. This is a place I can easily recommend for any traveler to Beavercreek in Dayton, Ohio.
