Japanese Curry Base, starter prep

Prep: 5 minutes Cook: 30 minutes

This is a starter recipe that we used to combine for a menchi katsu we made. I wanted a sauce to go with it. This will be quick and easy. It makes a roux that you can use how you’d like. Let’s jump right in.

Ingredients

  • 3 tbls butter

  • 4 tbls flour

  • 1 tbs curry powder

  • 1 tbls garam masala

  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Prep

  1. Warm a pot to about medium low and melt the butter

  2. Add the flour and stir until it combines and gets nicely thick

  3. Constantly stir to not burn. Do this for about 15 minutes and the flour will start to brown

  4. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir well

  5. This finishes the roux but to use, you can add water until it’s as thick/runny as you want while stirring and just spoon to serve

Afterthoughts

This smelled amazing and was super easy. It tasted great and kept on the stove while I cooked the rest of my foods. This is a simple and fast one to have under your belt for adding a little extra to various recipes.
