Festival Month Elephant Ears

Festival Month Elephant Ears

Prep: 30 minutes Fry: 5-10 minutes

Another classic fair treat is elephant ears. These are fried dough flats that get coated in cinnamon sugar. That’s it. Nice and simple. It doesn’t take a long time to mix but you do need to let the dough prove about 20 minutes adding time. I reduced the recipe to only make a few as I was alone to eat it.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup milk

  • 2 tbls sugar

  • 2 tbls instant yeast

  • 4 cups flour

  • 3/8 cup shortening

  • cinnamon to taste

  • extra sugar to taste

  • veggie oil for fryer

  1. Heat a pot and add the milk, sugar, salt, and shortening

  2. On medium heat stir until the shortening melts and the sugar dissolves

  3. Remove from the heat and let cool to Luke warm

  4. Add the yeast and sit and watch it foam

  5. Add to a bowl with half the flour

  6. Mix to make a dough and add more flour as needed to make a non sticky dough

  7. Let prove for about 20 minutes

  8. Break into small balls and roll out to flat little ‘ears’

  9. Heat the oil to 350 F (177 C)

  10. Add an ear to the oil and cook a couple minutes each side until a nice brown

  11. Remove and let the oil drip off and add to taste the cinnamon and sugar to the still hot ear

Afterthoughts

These were super easy and a lot of fun to make and eat. I have plenty of friends that love them and the photos impressed them. That’s good enough for me!
