Cheesesteak Steamed Buns

Cheesesteak Steamed Buns

Prep: 20 minutes cook: 30 minutes

I bought a new wok and have been thinking of this recipe for a while. I really wanted to try it and I'm happy it worked. This was overall very easy to make even though takes a bit of time. This recipe uses a wok and bamboo steamer. This makes about 4 servings.

Ingredients

Buns

  • 300g (2 2/5 cup) all purpose flour

  • 40g sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp instant yeast

  • 180 ml warm milk

  • 1 tbs vegetable oil

  • Pinch of salt

Filling

  • 1 ribeye steak

  • 1/4 chopped onion

  • 1/4 chopped green and red peppers

  • 2 slices provolone

  • To taste for marinade

    • Worcester sauce

    • Salt

    • Onion powder

    • Garlic powder

Prep

  1. Slice your steak into small chunks

  2. Add to a bowl and add marinade

  3. Mix and set aside at least for 20 minutes

Buns

  1. Add flour, sugar, yeast, and salt to a bowl

  2. Warm milk to 35° c and pour with vegetable oil into bowl with dry ingridients

  3. Mix until dough forms

  4. Knead well and let rest for at least 10 minutes

  5. Split into 4-6 smaller balls

  6. Lightly flour a flat surface

  7. Roll into about 6 in circles

  8. Set aside

Filling

  1. Heat wok to a medium high heat

  2. Add oil to coat bottom

  3. Add in steak and cook to desired done

  4. Remove steak and add veggies to wok

  5. Cook until softening

  6. Add steak back and mix together

  7. Remove and set aside

  8. Clean wok

Combine and steam

  1. Fill wok with enough water to soak bottom of steamer

  2. Set to boil

  3. Take filling and portion between buns

  4. Add a quarter of a slice of provolone to each and pinch closed

  5. Line steamer with parchment paper and add buns

  6. Let rest while water begins to boil

  7. Close steamer and add to wok

  8. Allow to steam for 20 minutes. They will expand

  9. Remove and enjoy

Afterthoughts

These came me out great. The buns were a good substitute for bread and did not turn out soggy as I worried about. They were soft and delicious and a very filling meal. This would feel a group and please and sub lovers. A great meal with plenty of flavor.
