Transforming Sides Mozzarella Onion Rings
We saw a gif of this and just had to try it. Onion rings layered with mozzarella for a gooey, glorious mess. I had to sort out a recipe, but combining a few options and here we are: A deep fried wonderful appetizer.
Ingredients
1 onion
1 bottle vegetable oil
2 eggs
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/2 tsp garlic salt
2/3 cup flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
Block of mozzarella
Prep
Pour the oil into a pot big enough and heat. It needs to get to around 365 F. Hopefully you have a thermometer that goes higher than 220 degrees.
Beat the eggs and add to a small bowl with the water
In another small bowl add the garlic salt and bread crumbs and mix it
In another small bowl add the count starch and flour and mix
Take the onion and cut in half in line with the rings.
Cut each half in half the same way. Push from the end to separate the rings. Group the rings two together of similar sizes.
Slice the mozzarella as thin as you can to fit inside the onion rings. Add a layer all around the ring
When the oil is ready, dip and roll first around in the flour cornstarch mix. Really cover it and go crazy. Add more of both if you need.
Dip in the egg mixture and coat it
Dip in the crumbs and coat the coating. If you don’t make a mess, you aren’t doing it right
Drop gently into the oil and cook for about 25-30 seconds until golden brown
Use tongs to pull out and repeat with the rest of the rings
Afterthoughts
This was an amazing, flavourful dish. The Italian breadcrumbs and garlic salt are traditional coats for normal mozzarella sticks as opposed to beer battered onion rings. This brought a new level of flavor and taste and mixed well. Gooey mozzarella was the perfect contrast to the burst of flavors and mixed well. This melted in our mouths for a cacophony of tastes.
